There are some pretty terrifying insects out there.
Even the smallest of insects are capable of defending themselves against predators one million times their size. There are two reasons insects sting: in effort to obtain food or in effort to defend themselves from becoming food.
To learn more about this, Dr. Justin Schmidt willingly lets these terrifying insects to sting him in effort to measure the effect.
To answer these questions, we first needed a way to measure pain – so, I invented the insect pain scale. The scale is based on a thousand or so personal stings from over 80 insect groups, plus ratings by various colleagues.
